Moving

3 min read
I've decided to move back to my old account, and hopefully get a little bit more active on DA once again. I'm  moving a bunch of my old pieces over, and will upload all new pieces to the account.

Dolphins

8 min read
I've been reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (everyone should read the book at some point!) and I loved the following quote, so I figured I'd do a feature on the theme:
For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.

We wandered in our sunlit shoals floating
belly up, and laughing at our own magnificence
we thumbed our noses at the birds.

The treetops were conquered by our borrowed hammers,
and we laid upon glorious two-by-fours debating clouds
or any other thing of significance. We watched the wind
pull and play against our scrawled sign which clearly stated
there were 'no girls allowed'.
Pastel fish flaunted. Taunted us to twilight; deeper waters,
grey areas. Flaunted and fled: left us drifting.
Disguised as dank school busses; necessities hauled us off.
Famously painted, they mimed the sun,
whose robust enthusiasm never managed to warm
the dusty bus through the tinted windows.
If we mimed sleep, heads resting on shady glass,
we could still glide.
Still, the spring and summer were ours
and for a while, the forest was full of Indians
slinking softly behind the briars – just out of sight.

Children

9 min read
I haven't been very actively lately, as I've been really busy with life, but I thought I'd at least post another feature, as I was given this wonderful premium upgrade for this account and it feels bad to waste it.

A few quotes to set the mood, then onto the feature!

"Ask a child for advice. They may not know much, but they know what is important."

"There can be no greater honor to a parent than to have a child who is greater."

"A child can ask questions that a wise man cannot answer."

"You are worried about seeing him spend his early years in doing nothing.  What!  Is it nothing to be happy?  Nothing to skip, play, and run around all day long?  Never in his life will he be so busy again."

"Children are unpredictable.  You never know what inconsistency they're going to catch you in next."

"The most interesting information comes from children, for they tell all they know and then stop."

"Modern cynics and skeptics... see no harm in paying those to whom they entrust the minds of their children a smaller wage than is paid to those to whom they entrust the care of their plumbing."

"You know your children are growing up when they stop asking you where they came from and refuse to tell you where they're going."

"The place is very well and quiet and the children only scream in a low voice."

"The prime purpose of being four is to enjoy being four - of secondary importance is to prepare for being five."

"Show me the games of your children, and I will show you the next hundred years."

Donavon by xlynnxzeex Kids VII by loudboxball MY CHILDMY CHILD
I remember the day when she stopped calling me Brad,
She wrapped her arms around me and said, "I love you, dad."
I know I had plenty faults and flaws, these things I realize,
But at that moment in time, I was special in someone's eyes,
She was my child despite genetics she had become a piece of me,
Though her mother took her away, in my heart she'll always be,
I know I had my troubles and I wasn't the best, but nor was I the worst,
I can't apologize to her enough that she was exposed to my curse,
My sorrows to her for in me she saw a piece of life's harsh reality,
It was a burden of substance and with that she became a casualty,
A casualty of my ongoing war with addictions and afflictions,
I pray for her at night and ask God that she sticks to her convictions,
For they are pure and innocent along with a heart ever so true,
Cliché to say, I know; but if you've ever met her you'd say so too,
She was my child, even if in the grand scheme of things it was just awhile,
To miss
:thumb264305772: SecretsDo you remember when you said to me,
You wouldn't run and tell,
How that I could trust you,
To hide the secret well?
They laugh and point when I walk by,
They call me painful names,
Even when I cry and wail,
They continue in their games.
You avoid me when I look your way,
But I assure you I'm not mad,
I'll still try to forgive you,
Even though it hurts so bad.
Their whispers really aren't discreet,
I wish I could just die,
Maybe then they would feel sorry,
About their childish lies.
I trusted you with all my heart,
Now you've killed my reputation,
I was a fool to believe in you,
Now I know I was mistaken.

belief and hope

I thought it was about time I did another feature, so here goes. Below are a bunch of amazing pieces on the theme of hope/belief -- something so abstract and yet so very important . Check them out!

Speranza by alterlier Make a wish by FenneArts A measure of hopeWe measure time in minutes,
and we measure weeks in days.
We measure miles in inches;
we've divided time and space.
We measure sight by distance,
and we measure that in scope.
Thoughts measure our existence,
but how do we measure hope?
Hope in time is neverending,
a distance far unmeasured;
until the end, from the beginning,
through pain and during pleasure.
How do we measure what can't be seen,
in rational spacial distance?
How do we measure what can't be killed,
by signs of its existence?
We measure past in days gone by,
future in days to come;
everything we measure,
measured by a rule of thumb.
How do we measure something,
so completely beyond scope?
Just like the distance of the sky,
we cannot measure hope.
faith by bkitten1 Just Believe by lilyuen Born to FlyI saw a boy with a kite on his back,
It was big and red, and considerably taller than the boy,
He ran down the street, his arms spread wide,
Laughing – he ran by me.
I turned to watch him go and read the words printed on the kite;
They were bold and black,
They said: "Born to Fly…"
As I continued to watch him run, arms spread wide
The boy began to flap his arms furiously – like wings.
Every beat of his arms in perfect time with the sound of his running footfalls,
I watched in awe as he leapt into the air,
And soared up into the sky, never threatening to fall.
He circled overhead, laughing in delight,
Then he flew away…
:thumb115879471: Suspension of belief by justfrog At the bottom... by mir0n The ImageShe was beautiful, but so sad. I wanted her to see she was beautiful. So I showed her. She was ashamed of her wings, which were now bound tightly to her back. I convinced her to let me unbind them.
She winced in pain as I untied the ropes and let them slip through my fingers and flutter to the floor. I examined her wings, they looked crippled, but in time would heal. After one moon’s cycle her feathers were soft and shining. She was truly beautiful. Then I taught her to fly again. She was scared, but trusted me. She didn’t give into her fears. She was beautiful when she smiled.
But, her ghosts were catching up with her. They surrounded her as she flew. They tore off her feathers, pulling her as she fell to the ground.
I came running to catch her. But before she could land safely in my arms she gathered her strength and flew off. I found her shivering, cold, and alone.
I tried to make her feel better, but she pushed me aside.
How could she do this? She had so much potential an

First of all, I think that my dream contest was pretty successful and I'm thinking of starting a new contest sometimes soon. I created a poll with some possible theme ideas I came up with, and I would love to have as many opinions as possible so please vote (on either my deviant page or journal page) and/or leave a comment (comments are very good!) about either your favorite theme on the list, or another theme that you think of that you'd like a contest about. I'd like to try and have the theme be something unique, as well as leaving a lot of room for (or requiring) a lot of creativity from entries. Also, once I decide on a theme I'll probably request prize donations before actually starting the contest, so if you're interested in donating keep that in mind.

Because it's almost the end of winter I thought I'd feature a bunch of newer deviations that utilize desaturation/limited colour (before we get all the beautiful spring colours), so enjoy the following pieces!
